The Group Policy Anywhere product (GPAnywhere) is a powerful Group Policy management tool that creates portable Group Policy templates. You can use these templates to effectively apply Group Policy to computers that are not part of an Active Directory domain. Now, GPAnywhere for VPN extends the reach of Group Policy even further by allowing you to distribute GPO templates through SSL VPN, effectively managing and securing these computers.
The GPAnywhere for VPN solution is comprised of two main components:
- GPAnywhere for VPN Client (embedded with SSL VPN client)
- GPAnywhere for VPN Console
The client software is embedded into the SSL VPN client and delivered to the target machine automatically. The GPAnywhere client performs two important activities at the target machine. The first operation is to create a back up of the current configuration. GPAnywhere for VPN GPO templates are designed to apply only for the duration of VPN session. When that session is terminated GPAnywhere rolls the machine configuration back to its state prior to the VPN connection using this backup.
After the configuration backup has been completed, the second activity involves GPAnywhere downloading and applying the appropriate template assigned to the user attempting to access the VPN. Different templates can be assigned to users and groups. Template assignment is performed through the SSL VPN administrator’s console.
The GPAnywhere for VPN Console seamlessly integrates with the existing Microsoft Group Policy framework. This console extends the Microsoft Group Policy Management Console (GPMC), so you can quickly and easily configure Microsoft Group Policy Object (GPO) settings and generate Group Policy templates from a GPO for use with GPAnywhere for VPN.
Leveraging the GPAnywhere for VPN Console, you can create custom templates based upon new or existing Group Policy Objects. The custom templates are then uploaded to your SSL VPN for assignment and distribution to your user base. Successful application of the templates can then be made a prerequisite for successful connection to the SSL VPN.
By providing the ability to apply Group Policy to SSL VPN users, GPAnywhere creates a method for administrators to manage connecting endpoints more thoroughly.
